Why is Music & Beneficial to Young Children?

Music & Movement is an essential part of early education. In creating our Music & Movement Class we remained true to our belief that classes for young children should foster all areas of growth and development. This class offers endless opportunities for growth and lots of fun!

Physical Development

Participation in Music & Movement gives children the opportunity to practice and develop fine and gross motor skills. Movement activities such as dancing, hopping, walking, squatting and tip toeing will help children work on gross motor development and balance. Children will have a chance to develop fine motor skills and eye-hand coordination while using a wonderful variety of instruments. Children learn through movement so our class is high energy and filled with lots of opportunities to get up and move. We encourage a respect for each other's personal space and this will help children gain body awareness.

Communication and Language Development

Music & Movement promotes the development of verbal and non-verbal self expression. Children will be singing, talking, making animal sounds, waving, pointing and signing. To expose children to the symbolic nature of written language, we will use alphabet mats to sit on and each class we will sing about the alphabet. The teacher will provide songs that require the children to call out ideas to encourage each child’s thinking skills.

Personal, Emotional and Social Development

We believe participation in Music & Movement builds self-confidence and self-esteem. Individual expression is accepted and encouraged. Following directions helps children develop concentration. Being a part of a group fosters self-respect and respect for others. It is also a wonderful opportunity for further developing the bond with their care giver and others in the class. Music can be a fantastic outlet for feelings, experiences and thoughts.

Intellectual Development

Studies have suggested that music can enhance intellectual development in children. Encouraging children to actively engage in the world around them influences brain development. We designed our class with the belief that children learn through play. Our classes offer a relaxed and fun environment for children to engage in their world and learn. Children will explore and process in a joyful, musical environment.

Mathematical Development

Research suggests that music and math are closely intertwined. It is thought that early exposure to music can help with mathematical skills later in a child’s education. Numbers will be involved in many of our songs and activities to provide learning opportunities.

Creative Development

Our songs and movement activities will allow opportunities for creative expression. Singing, dancing and playing instruments are a wonderful way for children to develop individual creativity and a love of music.

Special Benefits

Music & Movement offers benefits to all children. It allows children of all abilities to become involved and get to know other children. Children who are in the process of learning English as a second language are able enjoy the beauty of music and dance without the need for a strong grasp on the language. Since our classes embrace all different ways to participate in music, children with special needs can enjoy the class in their own way and still be a part of the group.
